Lead Service Line Inventory – What You Need to Know

South Davis Water District is completing a system‑wide service line inventory as required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This inventory helps identify any water service lines or fittings that may contain lead so we can plan for their removal.

A service line is the underground pipe that carries water from the water main in the street into your home or building. The District is responsible for the section from the main to the meter, and the property owner is responsible from the meter into the building.

 

What “Unknown Material” Means

Some properties in our system have been identified as having “unknown” service line material on the District side, the customer side, or both. That does not mean your line is lead, but it means we do not yet have enough information to rule lead out. To date, the District has not discovered any lead service lines.  As required by EPA, we are notifying customers and asking for help confirming the material of these lines.

If your service line is later found to contain lead, we will contact you to discuss options for replacement in coordination with state and federal requirements.

 

How You Can Help

You can help us complete this inventory and protect public health by:

  • Checking your service line material where it enters your home or building.

  • Reporting your findings online using our service line reporting form QR code.

  • Contacting us for assistance if you are unsure how to locate or identify your service line.

Lead, Health, and Reducing Your Risk

Lead can enter drinking water as it passes through lead service lines or lead‑containing plumbing and fixtures. Exposure to lead can be harmful to infants, children, pregnant women, and adults. To reduce possible exposure if your service line or indoor plumbing may contain lead:

  • Let cold water run for 3–5 minutes if it has not been used for several hours.

  • Use cold water only for drinking, cooking, and making baby formula.

  • Clean faucet aerators/screens regularly.

  • Consider testing your water or using a certified filter designed to remove lead.

ATTENTION IRRIGATION WATER USERS

Please remember that irrigation water is not treated.  This water comes directly from a river and is then stored in large open air reservoirs.  The water contains pathogens that will make you very sick if you consume it.  This water is only to be used outside on your yard.  Do not let your kids or pets consume this water.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 

HOW DO YOU BILL?

Culinary water is billed bi-monthly. The amount billed is based on actual usage as read from a water meter. During the winter season, when meters are covered with snow, usage will be estimated. Failure to pay the culinary bill for 4 consecutive months will result in water being shut off.  A warning letter will be sent to the delinquent resident prior to it being shut off. 
 
Irrigation water is billed according to the size of the property as recorded by the County.  Residential accounts have money levied automatically through property taxes at the end of the year for their irrigation payments.  Some accounts such as commercial, HOA, government, and institutional  are still sent bills in the mail for irrigation charges.

WHAT ARE THE WATERING TIMES?
There is no watering between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. If found watering during off hours, a warning will be issued for a first time offender. The next subsequent violation will result in a $30 fine. Each subsequent violation will increase by $30 per violation for the entire irrigation season. The violation will be added to the residents account. Failure to pay the violation will result in a tax lien being placed on the property with an additional $30 processing fee.
WHEN DOES THE IRRIGATION SEASON BEGIN AND END?
Typically the irrigation season begins on the Monday closest to April 15th, and ends on the Monday closest to October 15th.  This is subject to change, however.  Certain situations can lead the District to change these dates.  We will notify you when these changes take place.
It is important to have your master valve shut off prior to the turn on date in April in order to prevent flooding.
WHEN ARE YOUR BOARD MEETINGS?
The Board of Trustees meet on the second Wednesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. at the District Office located at 407 W 3100 S.  Public input is always welcome.
